Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, Saginaw, Michigan

Position: Artistic Director and Conductor. The Saginaw Symphony Association, in its
79th year and a charter member of the League of American Orchestras, presents a perservice,
professional ensemble which serves Saginaw, Bay, and Midland counties. In a
season (September to May) the Association typically presents three to four classical
concerts, one pops concert, one Holiday Pops, a chamber series, and other family and
youth concerts. The Association’s annual budget is approximately $600,000.


Responsibilities: to serve as the Association’s artistic director and principal conductor, and as a community arts leader.

The artistic director will:

  • plan the concert season (includes repertoire, rehearsals, guest artists, and outreach activities consistent with the Board’s direction and within the Association’s budget)

  • oversee orchestral personnel

  • audition new members as necessary

  • build and sustain the orchestra’s visibility though community involvement

  • participate in fund development, and promotion of the orchestra

  • work with the Youth Orchestra Steering Committee to coordinate activities and expand the Youth Program.


Minimum qualifications:

  • a Master’s degree in conducting or extensive orchestral conducting experience

  • a thorough knowledge of orchestral repertoire and styles

  • demonstrable ability to create excellent musical experiences for audience and performers

  • ability to talk engagingly with audiences of all ages on the podium and in the community

  • willingness to collaborate with other arts organizations in the area


Compensation: commensurate with experience, qualifications, and abilities.


Beginning date: contract to start at the beginning of the 2016-17 season. Finalistcandidates will be asked to submit a sample program and video, and agree to conduct
one concert during the 2015-16 season.
